THE AMBER COAST

The Amber Coast, along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, is named for the rich deposits of amber, found in the hills near the 75 mile stretch of beautiful beaches east of Puerto Plata. The white-sand beaches, impressive mountain ranges, spectacular rivers, waterfalls and exotic wildlife are just the beginning of the Dominican Republic's beauty.

Forests, mountains and miles of golden beach provide a playground for adventure sports seekers with activities such as mountain biking and horse riding available, as well as a host of watersports like diving, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

The port city of Puerta Plata is the region's capital and the main tourism enclave. On the outskirts of Puerto Plata is the major Playa Dorada complex of low-rise hotels in a country club setting of gardens and beautiful beaches, centred on the 18-hole Robert Trent Jones designed golf course. Seaside towns and communities that are also popular with visitors include Sosua and Cabarete to the east of Puerto Plata, and Cofresi to the west.

INTERIOR

The spectacular Cordilla Central, the country's highest mountain range, cuts right through the interior/center of the Dominican Republic. It's here visitors will find incredible geography, atypical of many Caribbean island destinations. The country's second largest city in the heart of the Ciboa Valley, Santiago, which had its start as a humble farming town, is a cosmopolitan city teeming with life. The area south of this city includes everything from fertile farming valleys, world-renowned for tobacco production, to incredible rivers and waterfalls, to the Caribbean's highest mountain, Pico Duarte, at 3087 meters. Incredible diversity just waiting to be experienced!

SAMANA PENINSULA

This peninsula, 245 kilometers north of Santo Domingo with its pristine environment, has numerous dazzling white beaches, lakes, marble quarries, vast palm groves and tiny islands (Cayo Levantado…)

Without taking anything away from the other regions, Samana peninsula is the country’s most extraordinary geographical coastal relief, and the most exotic asset of Dominican tourist industry.

The bay is a famous breeding ground for fish and shellfish. Take advantage of the opportunity to eat and savour the fried fish served with coconut sauce, a unique local dish.

SANTO DOMINGO

Christopher Columbus' brother, Bartolomé Colón, founded the Dominican Republic's capital city, originally named La Isabela, in 1496. A number of New World 'firsts' occurred here, including the first cathedral, university, monastery and hospital. This is also where Spanish conquistadors set off to conquer the rest of the Caribbean, and regions of North, Central and South America.   The city definitely experienced its share of trouble over the following centuries.Today Santo Domingo is a bustling and cosmopolitan city with 2.5 million inhabitants. It boasts activities to offer everyone - museums, ballet, opera, baseball games, and the greatest options of nightlife, restaurants and shopping to be found in the Dominican Republic.

In 1990 UNESCO declared its colonial district “Patrimony of Humanity”. More than three hundred monuments are carefully protected.

THE SOUTH-EAST COAST

Called the land of the rising sun, this part of the island has gorgeous beaches and crystalline water and was defined by UNESCO as “among the world’s most beautiful”. The lush vegetation, pleasant climate, Dominican hospitality have turned the eastern region into one of the best tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

The principal cities which make the East coast are Romana, Bayahibe, Punta Cana, Bavaro...

Bavaro and Punta Cana constitute the granddaddy of all beach resort areas in Dominican Republic if not in the entire Caribbean area. Nowhere else you will find so many hotel rooms lining a longer pearly white sand beach that’s dotted with literally thousands of palm trees just feet from the water’s edge.

THE SOUTH-WEST COAST

Imagine charming villages with colorful wooden houses and discotheques made of straw where nature reigns and you will find yourself in the absolutely magical south-western region of the island. The variety of the scenery is absolutely incredible: rivers flow to the sea and vegetation comes in all shapes and colors.

Travelling from the capital to Barahona you will come across sugar plantations, vegetable fields…The area between Barahona and Pedernales is known as the cactus kingdom.

Here it is the paradise of the individual traveller who will still discover an authentic area.
